Prevention is better than Cure – Kerala IT plans on setting a Crisis Management Plan to counter cyber threats

As part of the Kerala State IT department’s initiatives Kerala will soon have a draft Crisis Management Plan (CMP) to counter Cyber threats. This is in wake of the rising cyber threats across the country. “Cyber Threat is a menace we are facing today and it is imperative we formulate a CMP to counter these cyber crimes. I look forward various Kerala government’s various departments to deliberate and discuss on setting up a CMP directive for the same.” Says Dr. Ajay Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, Kerala IT.

The Central Government has also formulated Crisis Management Plan (CMP) for countering cyber threats for implementation by all Ministries/ Departments of Central Government, State Governments and their organizations and critical sectors. The organizations operating critical information infrastructure have been advised to implement information security management practices based on International Standard ISO 27001.

Some interesting facts are: According to Windows 7 forum, India is the safest digital country in the world with a total 52 attacks per 1,000 PCs; USA is ranked the most targeted country with the rate of 1.6 incidents per PC. Though China has biggest number of PCs after the United States, it is in the seventh place. Users in the United States were found to be most at risk: of 265,700,000 active PCs, there were 441,003,516 attempted cyber attacks, or 1,660 attacks per 1,000 computers. India fared best: with 48,100,000 active PCs, we only experienced 2,516,341 attempted cyber attacks.

But being safe should not stop us from taking the preventive steps in advance. After all ‘Prevention is better than cure.”
